Stockfolio app quote source2/28/2023 ![]() ![]() Right now, looking at my finances, I'm down close to 40,000US which is a significant amount of what I invested. I had to give up my apartment, move back in with my parents, and have only recently started back at work full-time in 2022 (after taking some time to work through the emotional trauma from the sudden breakup). Needless to say, the fall into early 2022 was a whirlwind emotionally. ![]() I got a package from the mortgage broker we were dealing with sent to our apartment saying "Congratulations on your home" - looks like her parents helped her buy a place of her own (found out she bought in her home town, about an hour/an hour and a half out of the city - something we talked about, but it's not as commute-able for myself being downtown every week for work). I tried to reach out to her parents, but I just got a "take care of yourself". I tried to talk with her to figure out things civilly, separate our shared furniture (having lived together for 4 and half years) but within weeks she moved what she wanted out of the apartment when I was out, left me to deal with the rest, stopped responding to messages and left me confused and devastated. I was totally blindsided (was planning on proposing this year), but obviously loved her and respected her decision. September came and after about a 7 year relationship - she told me she wanted to break up (honestly weeks after we saw a home together). I was working on set 16 hour days, and let her know that I couldn't think about buying a place until September. Having only been in stocks for about a year by the Summer 2021 - I had no idea what to expect. The issue was, we didn't know exactly where we wanted to live - she urged me to get out of my stocks to invest in a home, but I having seen them fall to roughly around the same price I had initially invested (and having seen how high they could go), I said I want to figure out where we want to live first (debating in the city downtown, or somewhere commute-able just outside the city) before pulling them out. Around April, I started a new job that was a short contract (working in TV) that absolutely drained me and had me fall into a deep depression. Once I planted the seed, I didn't realize how quickly she wanted to jump on this as it was the first we really talked about it, but within months we were dealing with a mortgage broker, getting employment letters, etc. They did well going into 2021, so I took some more stock advice from him and put about 2/3rds of my savings (about 73K total) into growth stocks like NIO (Chinese EV company) and BNGO - both of which did tremendously well by February of 2021, practically doubling my portfolio.Īround this time, I mentioned to my Ex that we could potentially buy a home. Thinking my ex and I were in it for the long haul (talking openly with her parents about marriage, children, etc), I took his advice and invested in a few companies he thought had great growth opportunity. In 2020 my ex's (26F) father, who is fairly well off, urged us to get into investing. I (28M) really knew nothing about the stock market. ![]()
